Maryland Homeowner’s Homestead Tax Credit

Have you applied for the Maryland Homeowner’s Homestead Tax Credit yet? If not, you only have until December 31, 2012 to file the on-time application and have the credit appear on your 2013 property tax bill. To date, over 850,000 homeowners across the state have filed their Homestead Application, but many more homeowners who are eligible have yet to apply. What is the Homestead Tax Credit? According to the State Department of Assessments and Taxation - “The Homestead Credit limits the increase in taxable assessments each year to a fixed percentage. Every county and municipality in Maryland is required to limit taxable assessment increases to 10% or less each year. The Homestead Credit does not limit the market value of the property as determined by the Department of Assessments and Taxation. Instead, it is actually a credit calculated on any assessment increase exceeding 10% (or the lower cap enacted by the local governments) from one year to the next.” To find out if you have already filed the one-time application in the past five years, you should go the Department’s website at and click on “Real Property Data Search”. If you have not submitted the application, the form will be mailed to you if you send an e-mail to requesting it. Be sure to include your street address in your e-mail for the property and the specific County where the property is located. For more information, visit today.
