Top 10 Beaches in Maryland

Maryland is home to a beautiful array of beach areas, some popular ones on the Atlantic Ocean, and others that are more inland or even manmade. If a trip to Ocean City is too far away, there are plenty of other beach areas that may be closer to you. Some are even close to Baltimore! Take a look at the top 10 beaches in Maryland.

1. Miami Beach Park

Get a taste of Miami’s sun and sand without leaving Maryland!

This beach is located 15 miles, or just less than 40 minutes by car, from downtown Baltimore in Baltimore County. Situated on a small peninsula extending from Bowleys Quarters, you can get to Miami Beach by following Bowleys Quarters Road off Route 150 (Eastern Avenue). You'll pass through a scenic wooded area dotted with a few farms, before finding the beach entrance where Miami Beach Road turns into Bay Drive. Look for a chain-link fence and gate in front of a small hut. To the right of the gate are a field and a parking lot.

The park is open from sunrise to sunset and is closed on weekends. Due to recent restoration efforts, swimming at the beach is sometimes prohibited. 

Miami Beach has more than 500 feet of sand and facilities including a pavilion, grills, playground, and a nature trail. The pavilion is used on a first-come-first-served basis, but can also be rented for group events.

2. Assateague Beach

This beach is located on Assateague Island, which is off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. The island has over 37 miles of sandy beach. There are a lot of fun things you can do here including: sightseeing cruises, kayaking, crabbing, bird watching, fishing and more. You can ride a bike and enjoy the wildlife along a nature trail. 3. Ocean City

4. Sandy Point State Park

This beach is located along the northwestern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis. The park boasts a lengthy beach where you can appreciate the bay in all its glory! Many people come to enjoy wildlife and bird watching. If you’re ready for an active day, you can go kayaking, crabbing, fishing, hiking, and more. 5. North Beach

Located in North Beach in Calvert County, this Beach has been called “The Jewel of the Chesapeake Bay.” People love to go biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, crabbing, and a lot more. Even though it’s a public beach, you must purchase a pass at the town’s welcome center. North Beach has a great boardwalk with lots of shops and attractions—you can even bring your dog! 6. Gunpowder Falls State Park–Hammerman Beach

This beach is located in Middle River, MD. It has 1,500 feet of beach and swimming area. You can choose from kayaks, wind surfboards, and stand-up paddleboards to rent and use at the beach. 7. Deep Creek Lake

Located in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, this is a great place for the entire family! It has pristine water and a sixty-nine-mile shoreline along Maryland’s largest lake. 8. Cunningham Falls State Park

This park located in Thurmont, MD comes complete with three differing swimming areas along one mile of shoreline in Hunting Creek Lake. There is a boat launch area open 24 hours a day depending on the weather. You can fish, swim, boat, and picnic here. 9. Rocky Point Beach and Park

Rocky Point Beach is located in Essex, MD in Baltimore County. The beach has a 300-foot shoreline of soft sand, set in a 375-acre park.  It’s open all year during the day for boating, fishing, and picnicking. You can stay active at the beach playing volleyball, sailing, fishing, and even having fun on the playground! People love to come for the great views of the Chesapeake Bay and Hart-Miller Island. 10. Breezy Point Beach

You’ll find Breezy Point Beach in Chesapeake Beach, MD in Calvert County. If you’re a fishing or crabbing enthusiast, you’ll love the 200-foot pier. The ½ mile of sandy beach is perfect for those who want to swim or soak up some sun. Guests can enjoy: camping, picnicking, sunbathing, playing volleyball and much more.
