Historic Cockeysville mansion embodies ‘adaptability and vision’

COCKEYSVILLE, Md.—A two-story, eight-bedroom country mansion, which pre-dates the Civil War, is for sale in Cockeysville for $1 million with the Creig Northrop Team of Long & Foster Real Estate. The home, registered as a Maryland historic site, also includes two trees – a Turkey oak and arborvitae – recognized as “Big Tree Champions” by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The trees stand on the 3-acre property with lawns and terraced gardens. Originally a farm and nursery, the residence was built in 1850 and has since been upgraded and expanded, including the addition in 1874 of the home’s main section, which has a center hall running from the front to the rear. Upgrades also included crown molding, arched doorways and other stylistic additions.

“This home’s story is one of adaptability and vision as each of its owners made modifications and improvements of the day that still work seamlessly together to make this estate mansion both livable and quite beautiful,” said Patrick Komiske, the listing agent from the Creig Northrop Team of Long & Foster. “An opportunity to purchase a piece of history such as this doesn't become available very often in this area."

The owners in the 1930s added a two-story marble portico with southern-style columns to the front of the home. More than half a century later, new owners consulted with historic Annapolis architect James Wollan for another set of upgrades, which included enclosing the back porch, adding and renovating bathrooms and other improvements throughout the home.

Later in 1994, a two-car garage was added to blend in with the estate. The 5,420-square-foot home today features three full bathrooms, three fireplaces, five staircases and 10-foot ceilings as well as the original hand-blown windows, wood floors, and siding and shutters with original hardware.
